Love our kids? Then let’s protect them like it matters.
Starting September 3, 2025, Newfoundland & Labrador will roll out a brand-new school bus stop-arm camera pilot project. Translation? If you try to sneak past a bus while kids are getting on or off, the camera will catch you—and your wallet will feel it.
The four-month pilot outfits six buses across the province (Paradise, Corner Brook, Gander, Happy Valley–Goose Bay, Labrador West, and Marystown) with cameras designed to record anyone ignoring the flashing stop sign. Current fines for failing to stop range from $500–$1,200.
Why this matters
Let’s be real: safe streets are non-negotiable. A stopped school bus isn’t a “maybe.” It’s not a “suggestion.” It’s a red light for all of us. And with kids being unpredictable little humans (one second they’re on the sidewalk, the next they’re chasing a dropped glove into the road), every extra layer of accountability counts.
Programs like this are about more than punishment—they’re about prevention. If the cameras make even one driver think twice, that’s a win for every family in this province.
What you need to do
- Stop means stop. When the bus has its stop arm out and red lights flashing, you’re parked until the bus moves again.
- Be patient. Add an extra beat this fall. The inconvenience of waiting 30 seconds is nothing compared to a lifetime of regret.
- Stay aware. Especially in neighborhoods where kids dart out from behind parked cars.
Why we’re talking about it
At The Ask Team, we spend our days helping families find homes in communities where they feel safe. That doesn’t end when the paperwork’s signed—it’s about keeping the whole neighborhood safe too. Supporting initiatives like this is part of building stronger, safer places to live.
So when you see the flashing lights this fall? Remember: protecting kids is the easiest decision you’ll ever make behind the wheel.
